President Donald Trump was escorted out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night after multiple gunshots were heard in the ballroom.
At least five gunshots were heard at the event held at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Several minutes after Weija Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, delivered remarks, music began playing from the back of the ballroom as attendees ate their first courses.
Trump, who was seated on a stage at the front of the ballroom next to First Lady Melania Trump, was immediately surrounded by members of the U.S. Secret Service, while many attendees hid under their tables.
Video of the incident shows the president being escorted off the stage seconds later, as armed guards wearing tactical gear and large rifles appear on the stage.
Several other top Trump administration officials were present at the event, including Vice President J.D. Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Jiang said a few minutes after the incident that the dinner would resume.
“I know everyone would like as many details as possible, and right now we don’t have them,” he said from the stage.
