Although you may not be driving to work every day as a retiree, you’ll still need reliable transportation. And for those with a fixed Social Security budget, it’s more important to choose something reliable and affordable than driving a flashy car.

With so many different car models available, it can be hard to decide where it’s best to spend your money. GOBankingRates asked ChatGPT for his recommendations on electric vehicles (EVs) suitable for retirees on a limited budget.

What to look for in an EV?

Before exploring the two EVs recommended by ChatGPT, it is important to understand what to consider when buying a car.

As you age, getting in and out of a car becomes a little more difficult. This makes it a top factor to consider during your search. The upfront cost of the car should also be reasonable and the maintenance costs should also be low.

With EVs, range is also an important consideration. Vehicles with greater range usually come with a higher price tag. Retirees just need something that can meet their daily driving needs.

    Best Electric Cars to Consider

Here are the top two EVs that ChatGPT recommends for retirees.

    CHEVROLET BOLT EV/EUV

ChatGPT said the Chevrolet Bolt EV is its top pick because it is “one of the most affordable EVs you can buy (especially used).” The starting MSRP of the 2027 Bolt is $27,600.

It’s not attractive. Its design is simple making it easy for people to get in and out. But what really makes it a great choice for retirees is that it typically requires low maintenance. Knowing that you won’t have to worry about much beyond preventative maintenance will help put your mind at ease.

Although the Bolt’s range is not very long, it is perfect for your daily travel needs.

ChatGPT summed up this car perfectly, saying, “This is probably the best ‘no stress’ EV out there. It just does the job without trying to impress anyone.”

    nissan leaf

Similar to the Chevrolet Bolt, the Nissan Leaf is one of the most affordable EVs on the market, with a starting MSRP of $29,990 for the 2026 model. This is ideal for retirees who want to keep their monthly payments low.

If you have never driven an EV, you may feel some hesitation. However, ChatGPT said that the driving experience in the Leaf is similar to that of a non-EV car.
