The United States has imposed 25% tariffs on most imports from Brazil starting next week, completing a year-long investigation into unfair trade practices by Washington, and renewing tensions with the Latin American nation after talks broke down.

The Brazilian Trade Ministry did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

The latest tariffs come after the Supreme Court in February struck down President Donald Trump’s previous 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods, keeping the global tariffs at just 10%. Trump has sought to restore his tariff power by launching Section 301 investigations, which allow him to impose levies on countries engaged in unfair trade practices, without additional congressional authorization.

The additional tariffs are necessary to provide a level playing field for American workers and companies, the Office of the US Trade Representative said in a statement.

This step was followed engagement monthsThis includes several high-level meetings between Brazilian officials and USTR representatives in recent weeks.

Lula reportedly said last month that Brazil would Do not accept treatment His country was reported to be referring to Trump’s proposal of 25% additional tariffs.

This controversy has also spread to Brazil upcoming presidential elections in October. Lula has accused Senator Flavio Bolsonaro of helping him introduce tariffs after his visit to Washington, although the senator denied this and said he planned to convince the Trump administration to do so. Delay imposition of tariffs Till after the elections.
