President Donald Trump said Thursday he is not worried about another attempt on his life, what prosecutors say is a third assassination attempt against him by a gunman at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 24.
When asked by a reporter at the White House if he was worried about another assassination attempt, Trump said, “I don’t think about it.”
The President said, “If I had done that, I wouldn’t be where I am.”
Trump also said he is not interested in wearing a bulletproof vest, as some have suggested.
“I don’t know if I can handle being 20 pounds heavier,” he said, drawing laughter from administration officials and lawmakers who were in the Oval Office to sign an executive order to create a new type of retirement account for workers who don’t have access to a 401(k) or any other tax-advantaged workplace investment plan.
Trump narrowly escaped being assassinated by gunman Thomas Crooks at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024.
The bystanders were killed by a Secret Service agent, but not before firing shots that hit Trump in his right ear, killing audience member Corey Comparat, and seriously injuring two other people.
Two months after that incident, on September 15, 2024, a Secret Service officer opened fire on another gunman who was hiding in bushes along the perimeter of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. That man, Ryan Routh, was convicted in Florida federal court on September 23 of attempting to assassinate Trump and other charges.
Roth is now serving a life sentence in prison.
