Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning usually begin six hours to six days after swallowing the bacteria. According to the CDC, the most common symptoms are diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.

While most healthy people may recover in four to seven days without treatment, some vulnerable groups, such as children under 5, adults age 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems, may experience more severe illness that requires medical treatment or hospitalization.

If you exhibit any of these more serious symptoms, the CDC recommends contacting your health care professional:

    • Diarrhea and fever greater than 102 degrees Fahrenheit
    • Diarrhea that continues for more than three days and does not improve
    • bloody diarrhea
    • Vomiting so much that you can’t keep fluids down
    • Symptoms of dehydration, such as increased urination, dry mouth and throat, and dizziness when standing.
