President Donald Trump and other top US officials were evacuated from the annual White House correspondents’ dinner in Washington DC on Saturday when gunfire erupted shortly after the dinner began.

At least five gunshots were heard at the event at the Washington Hilton Hotel at approximately 8:35 pm ET.

Trump, who was sitting on the stage at the front of the ballroom next to First Lady Melania, was immediately surrounded by U.S. Secret Service agents, while hundreds of attendees hid under their tables for cover.

It appeared that no one was seriously injured. The gunman was taken into custody.

Here are some of the chaotic scenes that unfolded after the shooting.
