Beijing — NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang is attending US President Donald Trump’s visit to China this week, the chip maker confirmed to CNBC, after initial indications were the executive was not invited.
A source familiar with the situation told CNBC that after seeing media coverage of Huang’s absence from the delegation, Trump called the Nvidia executive and asked him to join.
Huang flew to Alaska to board Air Force One, the source said.
Trump is bringing more than a dozen US officials to Beijing this week where they are scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday and Friday.
“Jensen is attending the summit at the invitation of President Trump to support the US and the administration’s goals,” a spokesperson for the chip giant said in a statement. When Nvidia was asked about Huang’s involvement mid-trip in Alaska, it mentioned the same comment, but did not give a reason.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Nvidia’s most advanced chips, widely used for training AI models, have faced tight US restrictions on sales to China over the past four years. The company said in February that US government-approved versions of the chips were not yet allowed in China.
“I still believe we are very far from agreement on export controls… It is positive that he is there and he is part of the president’s delegation, and it is important to him and it is important to the president,” former US Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez told “Squawk Box Asia.”
