When it comes to vehicle ownership, smart upgrades can help preserve your car’s value while potentially saving money as well. Although car owners may be reluctant to spend significant amounts of money on upgrades, there are some that can be beneficial.
7 new car models worth buying in 2026
JustAnswer’s auto expert Chris Pyle shares his top recommendations for vehicle investments that actually pay off over time.
1. Deep internal cleaning and protection
After a thorough internal clean, protective treatment is at the top of the pile.
“I always clean the interior of my new car very thoroughly,” Pyle said. “If the seats are cloth and the floor is carpeted, I apply Scotchgard to help prevent and remove future stains.”
Although this process takes time, it prevents costly damage. He shared that although this will not make you money in the short term, it will increase the value of your car when it is sold. “If your seats are badly stained, they may need to be replaced or covered when you sell them,” he said.
He said new or quality used seat covers aren’t cheap and could cost you more than $500.

2. Quality floor mats
Pyle recommends upgrading to better floor mats for both safety and convenience.
“I always upgrade to better floor mats that I can remove and wash easily,” he explains. “This won’t save you money, but it will make the car worth more when sold, and it will also make routine cleaning faster.”
3. Window tinting
Even if your car has some paint, Pyle suggests adding more for a number of benefits.
“I don’t go super dark, but just enough to help block out sunlight and keep the car cool while driving and using the AC,” he said.
The benefits go beyond comfort. “This will help your AC not have to work as hard. You can then reduce the blower speed so the AC has to run less,” he explained.
He said that this also leads to some savings in fuel usage.
4. Fresh Fluids and Maintenance Log
For used vehicles with unknown maintenance history, Pyle said he takes a proactive approach.
If you buy a used car and don’t know (or believe) its history, you should start a logbook and change all fluids, Pyle advised. Although costly initially, this step can help prevent costly problems.
“Staying on top of your maintenance will make the car last longer and prevent frequent breakdowns,” he elaborates. “Car failure caused by improper fluid maintenance is very common. By doing this you can save thousands.”
5. Paint Protection
The final consideration is external care. “You can polish and wax the car,” Pyle said. “It’s a process of a few hours, and it’s not expensive.” He said it protects the paint and makes it look better in general.
He concluded with a final warning: “However, hesitate, (because) auto car washers use harsh products for no-contact cleaning, which will waste your time spent waxing.”
