By age 70, it becomes more difficult than ever to earn much income, and at that age many people have to make do with what they have.

I asked ChatGPT to create a frugal budget for a 70-year-old and it planned to go a little further in seven major categories, keeping a modest monthly budget of $2,200, which included $1,800 from Social Security and $400 from a small pension.

    important things first

First, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot outlined the non-negotiables it refers to as “core expenses.”

    Accommodation

ChatGPT stressed that “housing is everything,” and that frugal seniors should downsize, move into senior housing or take any other measures necessary to rein in costs unless housing exceeds 30% to 40% of their budget, including:

    • Rent, Property Taxes and HOA: $700
    • Utilities (electricity, gas, water): $150
    • Internet and phone: $70
    • Total: $920

    Eat

Then, there’s food, which ChatGPT concludes that budget-conscious seniors can afford if they “focus on home cooking, store brands, and senior discounts.”

    • grocery: $250
    • Contemporary Cuisine: $50
    • Total: $300

    Health care

Next, ChatGPT cautioned 70-somethings that “healthcare is often the No. 1 expense risk at this age.”

    • Medicare Part B Premium: $175
    • Supplemental Plan (Medigap or Advantage): $150
    • Prescriptions and Copays: $100
    • Total: $425

    transportation

In the last major expense category, ChatGPT claimed that “downsizing a car or using senior transit reduces costs further.”

    • Gas: $80
    • Insurance: $90
    • Maintenance Fund: $50
    • Total: $220

    Lifestyle and flexible spending

Keeping the needs in mind, ChatGPT started budgeting to spend in small amounts for the needs.

    personal and miscellaneous expenses

The bot sets aside a modest, three-figure monthly amount for the things that make life a little more livable.

    • Clothing, Cosmetics: $75
    • Entertainment (Streaming, Hobbies): $60
    • Total: $135

    giving and family support

Next, ChatGPT allocated $50 per month to charitable work or helping friends and family, proving that giving is possible even on the tightest of budgets.

    financial security

Ultimately, ChatGPT created a small niche to provide financial support, setting aside $100 per month and reminding me: “Even in retirement, it’s important to cover home repairs, medical surprises, and inflation.”

You’ll notice that the total is $2,150 per month, not $2,200. This isn’t because AI can’t count. It intentionally created ample room for $50 per month to add flexibility to the plan.

    Well played, Chatgpt. very nice.
