Not all $100 grocery budgets in America are created equal. There are 24 states, or nearly half of the United States, where a $100 grocery budget covers $100 or less of grocery costs nationally, according to a new original research study from GOBankingRates.

GOBankingRates used the 2024 Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey to source household costs for various grocery expenses. Each state’s grocery cost-of-living index was sourced to calculate the statewide average for each expense. From there, the actual cost of various grocery expenses for each state as well as the purchasing power of each expense were calculated using a $100 grocery budget.
