House Democrats are introducing a proposal Wednesday that would give tax relief to election workers.
Under the legislation, led by Representatives Joe Morrell and George Latimer, both New York Democrats, stipends poll workers receive for working at the polls will no longer be counted as gross income for federal income tax purposes. The measurement was first obtained by CNBC.
“The tax cut for poll workers recognizes the vital role they play in securing American elections,” Morell said in a statement. “The Poll Worker Tax Cut Act will reduce the financial burden while incentivizing participation, strengthening election integrity, and ensuring that these civil servants are fairly valued for their effort, dedication, and patriotism.”
Morell, in her capacity as the top Democrat on the House committee with jurisdiction over federal elections, is leading efforts to counter President Donald Trump’s election priorities, including reining in mail voting and requiring voter identification at the ballot box and proof of citizenship to register for federal elections.

The legislation also comes amid bipartisan Tax Day rhetoric. Republicans have been promoting aspects of their 2025 tax and spending bill all week, particularly proposals like no tax on tips and no tax on overtime.
The House Republican conference highlighted the policies of the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” and took a dig at their Democratic colleagues at a Tax Day press conference Wednesday morning.
“Every single Democrat voted to raise your taxes,” Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich. and House GOP conference chairwoman, said at the event. “Why? Democrats think they’re better stewards of your money.”
Although the 2025 package extended many of the tax cuts from Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, most Americans said they are paying more in taxes, according to a gallup poll Released last week.
According to Gallup, nearly 60% of Americans surveyed by 2023 say they will be paying more in taxes, including 59% of those surveyed this year. And immediately after passage of the 2025 tax and spending package, only 32% of those surveyed Pew Research Center Bill approved.
Meanwhile, Democrats have cast the GOP’s tax policies as gifts to the rich.
