Grocery prices have been rising for years (and were even a major talking point of the 2024 presidential election), and with the rapid rate of inflation they still haven’t returned to pre-pandemic levels.

As a result, American consumers are feeling the financial pinch every time they go to the grocery store. However, despite those higher checkout prices, there are a handful of grocery items whose prices are falling in 2026, giving shoppers a rare break in the checkout lane.

Which groceries will be cheaper in 2026

Per intersection todayThe cost of these grocery necessities is falling:

    • Bread
    • eggs
    • pasta
    • Potato
    • Tomato

While the overall price of groceries continues to rise, thankfully these products have benefited from improved crop conditions and improved supply lines – especially eggs, which have finally come down in price after shocking cost increases in 2024 and 2025.

How to stretch your budget with these cheap groceries

With a little planning and a few easy recipes, a savvy and frugal shopper can stretch their grocery budget even further by creating a series of meals that rely heavily on these inexpensive grocery products. Doing this can be easier on your bank account while also providing you with satisfying and affordable meals, such as:

    • egg and potato mixture
    • baked potatoes
    • pasta with tomato sauce
    • Tomato Based Soup
    • pasta salad

Meanwhile, these products are becoming even more expensive

If some things go down, other things have to go up. In this case, while bread, eggs, pasta, potatoes and tomatoes are more affordable, there are several basic daily products that continue to rise in price due to costly supply-line problems and inflation:

    • coffee
    • salad
    • Ground beef
    • orange juice
    • steak

While higher grocery prices seem to be here to stay (for a while, anyway), smart shoppers can still find ways to stretch their grocery budget by identifying affordable groceries and building a range of meals around those ingredients — while also limiting pricier items like beef and coffee.
