My retirement dreams include short-sleeved shirts, lots of sunshine, and zero shivers — but what if I want to live that dream on a modest budget of $1,500 per month?
I enlisted ChatGPT for some info on potential retirement destinations, and it turns out that an affordable but comfortable retirement is possible.
affordable international options
ChatGPT started off with the following five exotic destinations that she said could help me stretch my money in the sun.
Ecuador
Citing the low costs of rent and groceries and the country’s high-quality but affordable health care, ChatGPT advised that “many retirees live comfortably on about $1,300 to $1,500 per month” in Ecuador.
It focused on “places like Cuenca” where “spring-like weather is enjoyed year-round.”
panama
Saying that “a budget of $1,500 generally works well for many retirees,” ChatGPT suggests Panama because it has a “warm climate everywhere.” More specifically, “some highland areas like Boquete are mild year-round.”
Additionally, it states that the country’s “pensionado visa makes life very budget-friendly.”
Colombia
Next, the chatbot suggested Colombia. It particularly singled out the city of Medellín for its “excellent climate” and “very low rents”. In fact, according to international lifeRent for a three-bedroom apartment in Medellin can start around $500.
It advised that I could live on “less than $1,500” while enjoying the country’s “good healthcare and growing expat community.”
morocco
In Morocco, ChatGPT suggests Agadir or Tangier, which it calls “Atlantic coastal cities where the weather is warm most of the year and the cost of living is very low.” Not only are “local markets and food” cheap, but rent is “often on a working-class budget at $250 to $400,” according to ChatGPT.
Thailand
Finally, there’s Thailand, which ChatGPT calls “a tropical island destination where the total cost of simple living is around $1,500 per month.”
While praising Thailand’s “year-round warm weather”, ChatGPT warned that “visa requirements may be more challenging.”
Is there anything you like Stateside?
Most people in America aren’t amenable to a comfortable retirement on $1,500 a month — especially if you’re selective about climate. However, ChatGPT said that the following options give me the best chance of getting it working.
South Texas and the Gulf Coast
ChatGPT suggests Corpus Christi and South Padre Island, Texas, because they offer “ample sunshine, coastal living and rents often under $1,000 for a modest space.”
The cost of living in Corpus Christi is 16.5% lower than the US average, and in South Padre Island it is 25.1% lower. best place.
Crystal River and Pensacola, Florida
ChatGPT recommends these two “affordable cities” in Florida because they “offer access to beaches, warm winters, and retirement communities.”
It advised that fares could be as low as $600 to $950 with “plenty of sunshine and no state taxes on retirement income.”
Mesquite, Nevada
Finally, ChatGPT pointed to Mesquite, which has “mild winters and very affordable rent.” according to apartment.comThe average rent is $954 per month.
It says retirees can spend $1,500 on the bare minimum, but advises considering mesquite only “if you can tolerate mild cold weather, but not deep freezes.”
