Car shopping for a teen? Experts Pick 6 Safe Midsize SUVs Under $10,000

If you’re looking for a safe, used SUV for your newly licensed teen driver that costs less than $10,000, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports has you covered.

The organizations recently released a list of 45 used cars and SUVs that are typically available for under $10,000, that have performed well in crash tests and have high-end headlights and automatic emergency braking systems that can detect pedestrians.

“We created this annual list specifically for teens because driving poses additional risks for them,” IIHS senior research scientist Rebecca West said in a statement. “That said, the suggestions are appropriate for drivers of any age who want to balance affordability with crash safety and crash prevention.”

“A teen’s first car is a big milestone,” Emily Thomas, associate director of auto safety at Consumer Reports, said in a statement. “Whether you’re buying a vehicle for them or deciding which family car they should drive, these lists help parents make those choices with confidence and without compromising safety.”

    6 expert-recommended midsize SUVs

    1. Volvo XC90
    Recommended Model Year: 2013-2024
    Average used price: $6,000

Car & Driver said: “Despite entering its ninth model year, the 2024 XC90 remains one of the sharpest-looking midsize luxury SUVs on the market. The same applies to the XC90’s cabin, which benefits from a simple yet modern interior design complemented by rich material options.”

    2. GMC Terrain
    Recommended Model Year: 2014-2020
    Average used price: $6,400

MotorTrend said: “Today’s small crossover market is brimming with choices, ranging from entry-level economy options to high-end luxury vehicles. Not as cheap as the lower end and not as lavish as the top, the Terrain intends a premium ambiance with American brand appeal.”

    3. Volvo XC60
    Recommended Model Year: 2013-2021
    Average used price: $6,400

Kelley Blue Book said: “Reasons that may draw buyers to Volvo dealerships include comprehensive safety features, sophisticated powertrains (including an engine that uses both types of forced induction, or a plug-in hybrid for greater fuel efficiency).”

    4. Nissan Murano
    Recommended Model Year: 2015-2020
    Average used price: $8,100

Edmunds said: “The 2020 Nissan Murano is known for its attractive exterior design and comfortable seats. It also has a powerful engine. But that style comes at a price. The sloping roofline cuts into rear visibility, making the Murano feel larger than it is.”

    5. Kia Sorento
    Recommended Model Year: 2016-2018
    Average used price: $8,200

Car and Driver said: “If you’re looking for a capable, flexible and comfortable two- or three-row-crossover, the Kia Sorento is a solid choice. Sitting for five or seven, three engines and both front- and all-wheel-drive variants means there’s a Sorento for every taste.”

    6. Audi Q5
Recommended Model Years: 2015-2025; Made after January 2015
    Average used price: $9,800

MotorTrend said: “Audi’s best-selling model is the Q5. And with good reason – this compact SUV offers a compelling blend of design, luxury, technology, versatility and performance.”
