The reliability of new Ford vehicles has come into question in recent months, as major recalls have affected a wide range of popular models.

Ford makes some of the best-selling pickup trucks in the US market, including the F-150. Now, a newly disclosed fire risk is affecting another popular nameplate: the Ford Ranger. Here’s which vehicles will be affected and what drivers should do.

Which models are included in the Ford recall?

Approximately 140,201 vehicles are involved in the recall, which are limited to one nameplate:

The Ford Ranger is a midsize pickup truck that sits below the F-150, known for being versatile and relatively affordable for its segment.

Why is the Ford Ranger a potential fire hazard?

“Sun visor or headliner wiring harnesses may be improperly located or have excessive tape thickness, resulting in wire damage,” the NHTSA recall notice states. “Damaged wires can cause a power outage and cause a fire in the A-pillar area, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.”

Ford said the company has not received reports of crashes or injuries related to the recall, but there have been three warranty claims, two field reports and one customer service report in the US that may be linked to the issue. The NHTSA recall number is 26V238000; Ford’s internal number is 26S29.

What to do if you have a recalled Ford Ranger?

Ford will send notices to drivers so they can take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for inspection. For vehicles that show a history of matching diagnostic trouble codes, Ford will inspect the sun visor wiring harness for damage and replace it – completely free of charge.

All affected Ranger trucks will also receive a free software update to prevent future short circuits.

The company began notifying dealers on April 17 and will send letters to drivers between April 27 and May 1. The letter regarding the measure is expected between August 3 and August 7.

Drivers can contact Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332.

    Is the Ford Ranger reliable?

The Ford Ranger has very few complaints registered on CarComplaints.com. RepairPal gave the latest Ranger model year an above average reliability score. The nameplate is not particularly unreliable overall, although drivers with affected models should bring it in for inspection as soon as possible.

Should you still buy the Ford Ranger in 2026?

Recall the news may be upsetting, but the Ranger remains one of the most competitive models in its segment. Pricing for the 2026 Ford Ranger starts at $33,350. It uses a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 270 horsepower and achieving 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Edmunds calls it the best midsize pickup truck of 2026 and 2027.
