Rising cost of living is reshaping what retirement looks like for millions of Americans — and for many, that now includes going back to work. Actually, according to March 1 really flex surveyAbout 30% of retirees are considering part-time or temporary work.
Nearly two-thirds of retirees surveyed (63%) said the rising cost of living is their primary reason for returning to work, while 32% said their savings are not enough. Also, more than half (52%) said they miss the social interaction that comes with a job, emphasizing that retirement decisions are often influenced by lifestyle considerations as well as financial considerations.
“Retirement is no longer viewed as a full stop; instead, it is becoming a more flexible and personalized stage of life,” said Novo Constare, CEO and co-founder of Indeed Flex. “The rise of flexible work platforms has made it significantly easier to re-enter the workforce on your own terms.”
Rather than returning to traditional full-time roles, retirees are gravitating toward jobs that offer flexibility, shorter hours, and lower barriers to entry. According to the survey, interest is particularly centered around these four industries.
1. Retail: constant social interaction
Retail was the most popular choice, with 33% of retirees saying they would consider working in a retail role.
“Retail jobs offer accessibility, flexibility and social interaction, making it an ideal industry for retirees,” ConStar said. “Many positions allow retirees to quickly step into roles without requiring extensive training or retraining. Retail shifts are also often predictable and part-time, making them ideal for individuals who want supplemental income without a full-time schedule.”
2. Freelance or Consulting Roles: Earn from Past Experience
Thirty percent of retirees said they would be interested in freelance or consulting roles.
“Freelance and consulting roles allow retirees to monetize decades of experience while maintaining full control over their time,” ConStar said. “These opportunities are particularly attractive to those who want to stay intellectually engaged and continue to contribute at a high level without the structure of a traditional job.”
They also provide a sense of identity and relevance.
“For many retirees, walking away from long careers can feel sudden, and consulting offers a way to stay connected to their field, mentor others, and take on meaningful projects on their own terms,” Constar said.
3. Hospitality: Short shifts and built-in flexibility
Nearly a quarter of retirees (23%) said they are open to working in the hospitality industry, including roles such as hotel, restaurant or event staffing.
“Hospitality roles attract retirees because they are people-focused and often flexible in design,” Constare said. “Retirees are placed in an environment that is energetic and social, which can be a strong attraction for those seeking interaction and a sense of community.”
These roles also offer shorter shifts and varied schedules, allowing retirees to work around their lifestyle.
“For many people, hospitality provides a balance of activity, engagement and income without the long-term commitment,” Constar said.
4. Driver or Delivery Jobs: Free Schedules
The survey found that twenty percent of retirees are interested in taking a job as a ride-share or delivery driver.
“Driver and delivery roles offer a high level of freedom and flexibility, which is in line with what many retirees are looking for,” Constar said. “These jobs allow retirees to escape traditional workplace structures and set schedules that suit their availability.”
Delivery jobs also have a relatively low barrier to entry and can be scaled up or down depending on financial need.
“For retirees who prefer less social intensity but still want to remain active and earn an income, these roles offer a practical and flexible option,” Constar said.
Retirement is no longer a fixed endpoint; This is becoming a more fluid stage where people are balancing income and purpose.
“What we’re seeing is that retirees are actively choosing work that fits their lifestyle rather than reshaping their lives around work.”
