The long-awaited meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will take place in Beijing on May 14 and 15, the White House said on Wednesday.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump will also host Xi and Madam Peng Liyuan for a “reciprocal visit” in Washington, DC, at a date to be announced later this year, White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt told reporters at a briefing.
The announcement is equivalent to postponing by about six weeks the China summit, which was expected to take place in late March and early April.
But Trump said in mid-March that the US had asked to delay that meeting “by a month or two” in view of the Iran war.
one in satya social post After Wednesday’s press conference, Trump said U.S. representatives were “finalizing preparations for these historic visits.”
“I am very much looking forward to spending time with President Xi, I am sure it will be a memorable event,” he said in the post.
The Trump administration has said it expects the war – which began on February 28 when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran – to last about five weeks, although some officials have offered different timelines.
Asked Wednesday whether Trump’s new schedule of his visit to China means the U.S. expects the war to end by mid-May, Leavitt said, “We’ve always estimated about four to six weeks, so you can do the math on that.”
