The US is set to begin blocking ships from entering or exiting the Strait of Hormuz on Monday morning, attempting to increase pressure on Iran to reopen the key oil route after failed peace talks.
President Donald Trump announced the plan on Sunday true socialCriticized Iran for refusing to give up its nuclear ambitions and accused Tehran of “world extortion” by continuing to block traffic through the strait.
The U.S. blockade, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET, will apply to “any and all vessels attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said.
US Central Command later warned that US forces “will not hinder freedom of navigation for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz from non-Iranian ports.”
Stock futures sank, and crude oil prices rose before the blockade.
