A drone strike sparked a major fire in Fujairah, the UAE’s main oil trading hub, with no reports of injuries, officials said Monday.
“Civil protection teams in the emirate immediately responded to the incident and are continuing their efforts to control it,” the Fujairah Media Office said on social media, according to Google Translate.
Reuters, citing two unnamed sources, reported that oil loading operations at the major oil bunkering hub had been suspended as a result of the drone attack. CNBC has contacted UAE’s ADNOC and is awaiting a response.
The attack follows a separate drone attack and shooting in Fujairah on Saturday, underscoring the vulnerability of the UAE’s only export route that bypasses the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Shipping traffic through one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints has virtually halted since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28.
Iran has retaliated by targeting ships trying to pass through the sea corridor, with several incidents reported in recent days.
