Representative Eric Swalwell said Sunday evening that he is suspending his campaign for California governor following sexual misconduct allegations against a Democratic lawmaker.
“I express my deepest regrets to my family, employees, friends and supporters for the errors of judgment I have made in my past,” Swalwell said. A post announcing the suspension of his campaign on X.
He said, “I will fight the serious, false allegations made – but this is my fight, not a campaign.”
Swalwell’s announcement comes after growing calls for him to drop out of the race to replace Governor Gavin Newsom, a fellow Democrat, and a day after the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said it was investigating a claim that Swalwell sexually assaulted one of his accusers in New York City in April 2024.
Swalwell was the leading contender in the governor’s race. San Francisco Chronicle A woman who worked on his congressional staff for nearly two years alleged that they had a sexual relationship when he was her boss and that he sexually assaulted her on two occasions when she was too intoxicated to give consent, reports Friday said.
Shortly after the Chronicle published that story, cnn The report said that in addition to that accuser, “three other women who spoke to CNN also alleged various types of sexual misconduct by the Democratic congressman – including Swalwell sending them unwanted explicit messages or nude photos.”
