    Research Methodology

To determine the best money market accounts of 2025, GOBankingRates analyzed the following factors across all banks (except neobanks): (1) total assets received from the FDIC; (2) the number of branch locations received from the FDIC; (3) Minimum deposit amount to open an account; (4) APY on money market account; (5) Minimum balance required to earn APY; (6) monthly money market fee ratio (percentage of minimum to avoid fees compared to monthly fees); and (7) average mobile app rating between Google Play (Android) and the Apple Store. All factors were then scored and combined, with the lowest score being the best. Factors (1) and (2) were weighted 0.5 times and factor (4) was weighted 4 times. All products and offerings must be available by November 1, 2024 to be considered. Rates are subject to change; Unless otherwise noted, rates are updated periodically. All other information on the accounts is accurate as of April 7, 2026.

Money Market Snapshot – Today’s Scenario

This snapshot shows how the top accounts compare to the broader market today. The strongest published rates are around 3.80% to 4% APY, while the FDIC’s national average remains 0.56%.

Top MMA Rates~3.8% to 4%$0 to $100,000+Highest widely published return
mid tier accounts~2% to 3.5%$0 to $25,000+Solid returns, but not market-leading

*Rates are variable and may change at any time.

Quick Solution: The best money market accounts are still dramatically outperforming the national average, and many no longer require large balances to remain competitive.

    3.90%$975
    4%$1,000

On a $25,000 balance, moving from the national average of 0.56% to a 4.00% money market account increases annual interest from about $140 to nearly $1,000. That’s a difference of about $860 per year.

What to look for in a money market account?

The best money market account is not always the one with the highest APY. You should also compare:

    • Minimum Deposit Requirements
    • Monthly Maintenance Fee
    • equilibrium level
    • Check-writing or debit card use
    • access to atm
    • FDIC or NCUA insurance coverage

Some accounts trade flexibility for yield, while others combine competitive rates with easy access to your cash. Quantic offers a debit card and access to 90,000 surcharge-free ATMs, Redneck Bank includes six free debit transactions per month and EverBank offers a debit card and checks upon request.

Money Market Accounts vs. Savings Accounts

Money market accounts and savings accounts are similar, but they are not the same. A money market account may offer features that resemble a checking account, including check-writing or debit card access. The tradeoff is that some money market accounts have balance tiers or transaction limits that don’t apply in the same way as standard savings accounts.

key takeaway: The biggest difference is usually the access features, not always the interest rate.

    Are money market accounts safe?

Yes. Money market accounts at insured banks are generally FDIC-insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category, and per institution. This makes them a relatively safe place to keep cash while earning interest.

    final take to go

The best money market accounts are still offering around 3.80% to 4% APY in April 2026, much higher than the national average of 0.56%. Most of today’s strongest options also keep fees low and minimums manageable.

If your savings are still decreasing 1%Switching to a high-yield money market account can give a meaningful increase to your annual interest without taking on market risk.
