A widely used over-the-counter nasal spray is being recalled over concerns it could pose a poisoning risk to children.

Bayer is recalling about 786,100 travel-size bottles of Afrin Original nasal spray after federal regulators flagged the packaging as a potential hazard to children.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on Thursday, April 30, citing concerns that the 6 mL bottles are not appropriately child-resistant.

Which products are included in the nasal spray recall?

This recall applies to unexpired travel size Afrin Original Nasal Spray bottles in the 6 mL (1/5 fl oz) size.

The affected bottles include lot numbers:

    • 230361
    • 240822
    • 241198
    • 250066
    • 250152
    • 250646
    • 250831

The bottles are labeled “Afrin Original Nasal Spray” on the front with a size marking. The lot number is printed as a six-digit code followed by the expiry date in the format “YYYYMMMM”.

No other Afrin products or sizes are included in the recall.

Why is the nasal spray being recalled? Were any injuries reported?

According to the CPSC, the nasal spray contains imidazoline, a substance that is required to be in child-resistant packaging under federal law.

Officials said the affected bottles did not meet those standards and also lacked warning labels required for non-compliant packaging. If small children swallow the spray, it can cause serious injury or illness due to the toxicity of its contents.

CPSC said no incidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the recall.

Where was the recalled nasal spray sold?

The recalled nasal sprays were sold nationwide from September 2024 to April 2026 at convenience stores and travel centers, including airports.

They retail for about $7 to $9.

What should consumers do if they have purchased the recalled nasal spray?

Consumers are urged to immediately store the product out of the sight and reach of children.

To receive a refund, customers must:

    • Visit Bayer’s recall webform online
    • Submit product photo
    • Dispose of bottle after storage

For assistance, consumers can contact Bayer at 800-317-2165, Monday through Friday from 8am to 8pm ET. Further information is also available via the recall page linked on Afrin’s official website.
