President Donald Trump said Tuesday he thinks the United States is “going to make a big deal” to end weeks of war with Iran, though he said he does not expect an extension of the cease-fire that was set to expire Wednesday.
“I think they have no choice,” Trump said during an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” when asked what he expected from another round of peace talks with Iran.
“We’ve taken out their navy, we’ve taken out their air force, we’ve taken out their leaders,” the president said.
“Obviously, we’ve removed their leaders, which kind of complicates things, but these leaders are much more rational,” Trump said. “This is regime change, whatever you want to call it, it’s not something I said I was going to do, but I have done it indirectly.”
Asked whether he would extend the ceasefire to allow time for peace talks to end the war, Trump said, “Well, I don’t want to do that.”
