Grocery prices may not be rising as fast as they once were, but they are still high enough in 2026 to put a strain on the budget of almost every household. What used to be a routine trip to the store now feels like a financial balancing act, especially with gas prices rising.

Good news? It’s possible to cut your grocery bill by a few hundred dollars per month with a few smart, manageable changes. Here are four practical strategies to help you spend less without sacrificing what you need.

Plan your meals based on savings

It feels good when everything you were planning on buying is on sale, but there’s an even better feeling: saving money by buying strictly the items that are on sale. According to Capital One Shopping, the average shopper saves 6.4% by using digital coupons (or about $1,465 per year), but you can improve that number by shopping strategically.

Before making your grocery list, check what’s currently on sale at your local grocery store. Many free apps can help you find promotions, so you don’t miss any good deals. Let coupons dictate your menu by planning your meals for the week based on what’s on sale.

It’s always smart to plan your shopping trip, thus your meals, before you go to the store, so that you don’t stray from buying impulse items and instead stick to your budget. When you strategically plan what to cook in the coming days based on what’s available on sale, you can save even more.

    Join the Loyalty Rewards Program

If your grocery store offers a rewards program, take advantage of it. Depending on the program, you may find special deals to use when planning your sales-only weekly menu or points you accumulate and later redeem.

Many of these programs also apply to pharmacy items stocked in supermarkets, so you can increase your savings in that area.

    buy generic

Generic or store brands are almost always identical to the name-brand product. In addition to having similar materials, they are also often made by the same manufacturers.

So don’t waste your money by paying extra for a more recognizable label. Always look for and choose the nearby generic version.

Replace meat with plant-based proteins a few times a week

You can eat a balanced diet at a lower cost by replacing meat for inexpensive plant-based proteins like lentils. There’s no need to go full vegan if that’s not your style. If you make it a habit, eating vegetarian dinners just twice a week will significantly reduce your grocery expenses.

Use this savings strategy to check out some vegan recipes, and you might even find your new favorite meal. These are some ways to keep your grocery budget manageable without having to sacrifice your favorite foods.
