Yes, the US stock market is open today (if it is a weekday and not a holiday). The stock market generally operates Monday through Friday, except for federal holidays.

    From today:

    • If it is a regular weekday, the markets are open
    • If it is a holiday the markets remain closed

American markets like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq follow a set holiday schedule every year.

    stock market timings today

    regular trading hours

    Session time (ET)
    market open 9:30 am
    market closed 4 pm

Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq follow these hours.

    extended trading hours

    Session time (ET)
    pre-market 4 am to 9:30 am
after hours 4 pm to 8 pm

Extended trading is available through many brokers, but includes:

    • low liquidity
    • high volatility

when the stock market is closed

The stock market is closed for 10 major holidays each year, including:

    Holiday 2026 date
    new Year’s Day 1 January
    mlk junior day 19 January

    Independence Day (celebrated) 3rd July
    labor day september 7
    Thank you 26 November
    Christmas 25th December

On some days, like Black Friday, markets close early (1 p.m. ET).

Why may the market remain closed today?

If the market is not open, it is usually due to the following reasons:

    1. Federal Holidays

Markets follow the same holiday schedule as banks and government offices.

    2. Weekend

Markets remain closed on Saturday and Sunday.

    3. Special Off (Rare)

Unforeseen events can sometimes halt trading, although this is uncommon.

    real world example

    If today is:

    • Monday to Friday (non-holiday) = The market is open from 9:30 to 4 pm
    • Saturday or Sunday = market is closed
    • holiday like thanksgiving = market is closed

Most of the confusion arises from the holidays or the days leading up to them.

Benefits vs Tradeoffs of Market Timing

    advantage why it matters exchange
predictable schedule Easy to plan trades limited flexibility
extended hours more opportunities More risk, less quantity
holidays off system stability delayed transaction
