When it comes to retirement, many retirees find themselves on a fixed income. Any increase in the cost of living can be financially devastating, which is why, when it comes to the grocery store, it’s important to save money.

The price of food can fluctuate significantly from year to year. To help retirees prepare for any unexpected price changes, GOBankingRates asked ChatGPT about the best ways retirees can cut grocery bills.

Plan meals based on sales (not recipes)

First, ChatGPT suggested that retirees plan their meals based on sales rather than recipes. It says pick up some proteins on sale, add seasonal produce and then use staples from the pantry to fill any gaps.

according to CBS NewsOverall food costs have increased by approximately 19.6% since 2022. The impact of higher food prices can be challenging for retirees with limited income. The option is to find cuts either at the grocery store or in another area. ChatGPT notes that grocery bills can become less expensive with “planning, price awareness and flexibility” and should not require “excessive couponing or sacrificing nutrition.”

    Shop Store Brands Almost Everywhere

According to ChatGPT, retirees can save 15% to 40% per item when shopping from a store’s private label, and most of the goods are made by the same brand-name manufacturers.

As reported cnbcStore brands or private labels have become a multi-billion dollar industry, whose popularity has increased significantly in recent years. Additionally, the news platform reported that consumers are trusting these non-brand-name products more than ever, with 84% saying they trust the quality of private labels as much as national brands.

    Use Senior Discounts Strategically

ChatGPT also noted that senior citizens often ignore the discounts offered by grocery stores. It states that retirees can get 5% to 10% off during a specified day of the week at local retailers or additional discounts at Warehouse Club stores.

ChatGPT encourages retirees to inquire with customer service if a store does not have a senior discount advertised.

Buy short trips, not big vehicles

“Impulsive buying is the hidden budget killer,” ChatGPT said. It suggests shopping once a week, sticking to a list, and avoiding shopping when hungry.

according to Capital One Shopping89% of shoppers report impulse buying to some degree, and more than half have spent $100 or more on an impulse purchase. In fact, retailers rely on impulse purchases from consumers. Capital One notes that impulse purchases account for approximately 62% of grocery sales revenue and up to 80% for some products.

    stop aggressively

ChatGPT also recommends using a freezer to save money. It said that items like meat and bread should be bought frozen. It was also suggested to freeze the leftover food immediately.

Buying in bulk and freezing is a known cost-saving method for many families. This can help reduce wastage and ensure quick meals on the road. However, it is important to know what can freeze and what can spoil over time. Also, proper defrosting is essential to ensure food safety.
