If you were an Xfinity customer in 2023, you may be eligible for payments.

Comcast has agreed to pay $117.5 million to settle a class-action lawsuit stemming from a cybersecurity breach that exposed the personal information of millions of Xfinity customers in October 2023.

The lawsuit alleges that Comcast “failed to appropriately protect personal information” and had “inadequate data security.” The communications company has denied any wrongdoing. Comcast told customers in a notice that personal information in the data breach included usernames, passwords, contact information, dates of birth and the last four digits of Social Security numbers.

According to the Comcast settlement website, the settlement is now open for claims, and current or former customers who were notified of the breach by Comcast in December 2023 may be eligible for payment.

Here’s what you need to know about settlement payments, including who is eligible, how much to expect and when the payments will be released.

Who is eligible for Comcast settlement payment?

According to the settlement website, the money is reserved for people whose personal information was accessed during the 2023 data breach. Consumers who were notified of the breach in December 2023 are part of the settlement class.

Not every Comcast customer is automatically eligible to file a claim for payment.

When is the last date for filing claim?

The last date for online claim submission is September 14. If you are filling out a paper form, it must be postmarked before September 14.

How much are the Comcast settlement payments?

Those who qualify can submit a claim to be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses or lost time, with a maximum payout of up to $10,000.

This number is influenced by the total pool of settlement amount and the number of affected customers who have filed claims. Valid claims for out-of-pocket losses must be filed by September 14.

Affected consumers who do not want to go through the process of proving out-of-pocket damages or lost time can opt for an alternative cash payment of $50; However, this amount is also subject to change depending on the total number of claimants.

The last date for filing claims for alternative cash payment is also September 14.

When will settlement payments be released?

A final approval hearing is scheduled for August 5, and payments are expected to be released after that.
