The next round of Social Security payments is set to begin this week, putting monthly benefits in the hands of millions of retirees and other recipients as debate grows over the long-term future of the program.

According to the Social Security Administration, beneficiaries born between the 2nd and 11th of the month are scheduled to receive benefits on Wednesday, July 15. The payment comes as policymakers debate how to advance the program, which faces a projected funding shortfall in the coming years.

According to some estimates, Social Security’s retirement trust fund could face a deficit as early as 2032. If lawmakers do not intervene, retirees could see an estimated 28% reduction in benefits, prompting competing considerations to preserve the program’s long-term finances.

One proposal that has attracted recent attention comes from a Washington think tank, which has suggested limiting annual Social Security benefits to $100,000 as a way to strengthen retirement trust funds.

Here’s what beneficiaries need to know about this week’s payments.

Who gets their Social Security payment this week?

Recipients born between the 2nd and 11th of any month are scheduled to receive their monthly Social Security benefit on Wednesday, July 15, according to the SSA’s payment calendar.

When are Social Security payments sent?

Most Social Security recipients receive benefits on Wednesdays, with payment dates determined by their birth dates.

    • Date of birth between 1st and 10th: 2nd Wednesday of the month
    • Date of birth between 11 and 20: third Wednesday of the month
    • Birthdate after 20th: Fourth Wednesday of the month

People who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 usually receive payments on the third day of the month, unless it falls on a weekend or holiday.

Recipients who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income typically receive their Social Security payments on the third day of the month and their SSI benefits on the first day of the month.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) checks are typically issued on the first business day of the month. The remaining payment dates for 2026 are:

    • Friday, July 31, 2026 (check for August 2026)
    • Tuesday, September 1, 2026 (check for September 2026)
    • Thursday, October 1, 2026 (check for October 2026)
    • Friday, October 30, 2026 (check for November 2026)
    • Tuesday, December 1, 2026 (check for December 2026)
    • Friday, December 31, 2026 (check for January 2027)
