It may seem like retirement is something to think about until later in life, but the financial decisions you make today can shape the quality of your future.

You can protect your financial independence and peace of mind by planning, whether you’re just starting out, supporting a family, or nearing retirement.

Many people delay saving for retirement because they believe they need more income before they can get started.

However, financial expert Sonja Stein, strategic head of wealth management at Momentum Financial Planning & Advice, agrees that stability is often more important than the amount you save.

Even modest monthly contributions can add up significantly over time due to compound growth, where your investment earns returns that continue to earn returns of their own.

Time is one of the biggest benefits of retirement planning. Starting early gives your savings the chance to grow over decades, making it easier to make a big investment without putting too much of a strain on your monthly budget.

Waiting just five or 10 years can shorten this growth period significantly. You may need to save a larger portion of your income later to reach the same retirement goals.

Building good savings habits is equally important, says Steyn. You can stay on track by regularly setting money aside, reviewing your retirement savings as your circumstances change, and seeking professional advice.

“A qualified financial advisor can help you understand retirement products, tax benefits and changing rules while developing a plan that suits your personal goals and lifestyle.

They can also provide valuable support during periods of economic uncertainty, helping you avoid emotional financial decisions that could impact your long-term plans.

According to Stan, retirement planning isn’t just about preparing for old age.

“It’s about making sure you have the freedom to be comfortable, independent and enjoy the lifestyle you’ve worked hard to achieve.”
