The US launched “a series of powerful strikes” against Iran on Tuesday in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, US Central Command said.
The new US attacks threaten to reignite conflict in the region and could raise fears that the Strait of Hormuz will be closed again. Oil prices rose dramatically during the US–Iran conflict, leading to inflation around the world.
The attacks follow a confrontation between the US and Iran following similar Iranian attacks last month on commercial ships in the strait, one of the world’s most important chokepoints which Iran had closed for months this year. The two sides agreed to stand down amid a tough ceasefire in the days following last month’s exchange as talks continue to end the war.
