BP PLC British oil and gas giant BP is increasing its focus on upstream growth to boost long-term shareholder value. The upstream development strategy primarily focuses on replacing its reserves to counter the decline in natural production and achieve 100% reserve replacement ratio by 2027.
BP’s exploration successes have emerged as one of its key growth catalysts. The company announced 14 new discoveries from early 2025, including discoveries made in Egypt and Angola in 2026. It highlighted that many of these discoveries are short-cycle opportunities that can be linked to its existing infrastructure. This offers key benefits including faster commercialization and lower capital requirements to bring them online. BP is prioritizing capital-efficient production growth to help offset the decline in production.
Furthermore, beyond short-cycle growth, BP’s long-term growth outlook is primarily supported by its high quality position in the US. This includes the Boomerangu discovery in Brazil, which is estimated to contain 8 billion barrels of resources and has the potential to be a long-term growth driver for its upstream business. BP also continues to grow its Gulf Americas portfolio with the Pelogene development, which is expected to deliver high-margin production growth over the long term.
Management noted that during the beginning of 2020, the company was not actively focusing on exploration. However, currently, BP is prioritizing adding new upstream opportunities to its portfolio to replenish produced reserves and move towards its 100% reserve replacement target. The combination of short-cycle development and long-term development projects is expected to support BP’s production growth and cash flow generation in the coming years.
Other energy sectors compete with diversified upstream portfolios
Chevron Corporation CVX has an unmatched portfolio of high-quality assets in the Permian Basin that drive peer-leading organic growth. Additionally, the company has a global presence and major international assets, including premium assets acquired in Guyana, the Bakken and the US Gulf through the Hess acquisition in 2025.
Exxon Mobil Corporation XOM is among other industry majors due to its strong upstream presence in several regions around the world, including the United States, Canada/Other Americas, Asia and Africa. More than 50% of XOM’s oil and gas production comes from high-return, profitable properties with low production costs. These high return assets, which include its Guyana and Permian Basin resources, provide a competitive edge over other players and secure a strong production outlook as the Company continues to increase total production from them.
