Most collectors will tell you that older coins are generally more valuable than their newer counterparts, but there are coins still in circulation that are worth your time and effort to dig up. However, be sure to curb your enthusiasm – only a few pennies in circulation are worth life-changing pennies, and they are generally known to contain errors in a critically low number.
Most U.S. coins are minted for circulation or as collection coins at three production facilities: Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco (the West Point Mint stopped producing coins in 2021). When rifling through change or found coins, always be sure to set aside all pre-1965 Roosevelt coins, which have a 90% silver composition and are worth significantly more than their face value.
While antique dimes can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars, keep in mind that the value of dimes, especially dimes in circulation, may not significantly exceed their face value unless they are in exceptional condition (serious collectors always want quality).
However, while most dimes in circulation are generally not as valuable as rare and collectible coins, there are some key dates and varieties worth noting. Here are 10 US dimes that may have some extra value due to their rarity or uniqueness.
1. 1965 Roosevelt Dime, No Mint Mark
The only variety of a coin from 1965 was the one without a mint mark, produced by the Philadelphia Mint – but many were minted. According to experts at Ned Ludd Coins, some 1965 Roosevelt dimes, in excellent condition, can be worth more than $1,000, but most are worth 20 cents to $2.50. Items made of silver have been sold for thousands of dollars.
2. 1968-S Number-S Roosevelt Proof Dime
The 1968-S Roosevelt Dime without mintmark (“No-S”) is a proof error coin that can be extremely valuable. Since its inception in 1986, the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) has certified only 18 1968 No S Proof dimes. A specimen sold at a heritage auction Over $40K in 2008.
3. 1970-S Roosevelt Dime, No Mint Mark
Some 1970-s Roosevelt dimes were accidentally struck without a mint mark, making them valuable to collectors. According to a coin appraiser the coin is valued at approximately $250.
4. 1972-S Roosevelt Dime
Here’s a good example of a regular coin with a regular penny value. CoinTrackers.com estimates that 1972 Roosevelt dimes will be worth 10 cents in average condition, while one in mint condition could be worth about $36. Not exactly trinkets, but unfortunately, no more than pocket change. However, a proof dime of the highest quality (MS 70 grade) made this year from copper and nickel sold for $8,400 in 2008.
5. 1975 Number-S Roosevelt Dime
The 1975 No-S Proof Roosevelt Dime is one of the most valuable of all modern coins. Only two known specimens exist. Its most recent sale raised nearly half a million dollars ($456,000) due to its scarcity, according to CoinValueChecker.
6. 1982 and 1983 Roosevelt Dimes, No Mint Mark
Some coins of 1982 and 1983 were minted without a mint mark, and these varieties may be of interest to collectors. Notably, some 1982 coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint were struck with an inverted die that did not bear the “P” mint mark. Expect to buy or sell these for about $65 per graysheet. Uncirculated examples can reach up to $175. 1983-S Roosevelt dimes were issued only as proof coins (ready for display), making them rarer than regular dimes of the time.
7. 1996-W Roosevelt Dime
The 1996-W Roosevelt Dime was a special issue to mark the 50th anniversary of the Roosevelt dime design. Its limited mining capacity (1.457 million) makes it relatively rare. These were included in special uncirculated sets for collectors in 1996. According to Gainesville Coins, it is the only non-bullion coin still issued at the West Point facility.
8. Bonded Group of 1998-P Roosevelt Dimes
A true oddity. The Philadelphia Mint minted over a billion dollars in 1998, so even an uncirculated coin from this year can be yours for a few bucks. According to Stack’s Bowers Galleries (where it stack of coins paperweight was sold for $9,200), a minting error resulted from “a coin press malfunction resulting in a large group of approximately 32 deformed coins banded together.”
9. 1999-D Roosevelt Dime
While one of these “Type 2 Clad Regular Strike” error strike dimes Sold in 2009 for $14,375 in “fantastic uncirculated condition”, according to coin collector site RobPaulsenLive.com, one in average condition will set you back only a few dollars.
10. 2020-D Roosevelt Dime
One of these sold for $338 per PCGS on eBay in 2021. Why? The 2020-D Roosevelt dime has a lower mintage than other years, potentially making it more collectible. But these usually sell for less than $15 when they are in impeccable shape and sell for almost nothing in circulated condition.
