President Donald Trump said Thursday he would be “honored” to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
The US President said he would meet the Iranian leader if a deal is reached to end the US-Iran war, which has dragged on for a fourth month. After making the announcement about coal, Trump was taking questions from reporters in the Oval Office.
“If we make a deal, it’s possible I’ll meet,” he said. “I wouldn’t mind that.”
Khamenei was named supreme leader in Iran after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed on the first day of fighting.
Trump said that despite the death of his father and other members of his family in US-Israeli attacks, he expected Khamenei to be a “professional”.
“He actually has a very good reputation in some circles,” Trump said.
