There are many factors to consider when choosing your ideal retirement location: Affordability often matters most, of course, followed by security. But you’re also hoping for a city or town with plenty of natural beauty and plenty of fun things to do, whether that includes a thriving arts and culture scene or active sports leagues.

If housing is eating up half your paycheck, this is the stage of financial endeavor you can’t skip

5 signs you’re losing money every month – and how to spot the leaks

You have a lot to consider, and the search already seems daunting. Luckily, you have a fantastic ally at your fingertips – ChatGPT.

Using ChatGPT, you can enter your criteria for where to spend in retirement – even how much you’d like to spend each month – and generate a list of interesting options. That’s exactly what I did. Although I’m a long way from retirement, I wanted to see what ChatGPT could offer if I gave it a clear set of parameters. I wanted a retirement place that was safe and beautiful, where I could live on $3,000 a month.

I must say, ChatGPT did not disappoint. In fact, it surprised me with some of the best selections.

How did ChatGPT share its results?

ChatGPT organized its results clearly, with individual towns and cities sorted under subheadings that reflected different US regions while offering an international option. Recognizing that Florida is celebrated as a paradise for retirees, ChatGPT has also created a separate section for places in the Sunshine State. It also listed options under a category titled “Other American gems identified in recent coverage”.

For readers who wanted a quick overview, it highlighted one top selection, followed by two cities ranked second. It looked like this in my window:

    Hagerstown, Maryland

    • monthly cost: ~$2,804 for needs per couple – which includes rent, groceries, health care, utilities, and transportation. (Source: NASDAQ)
    • Why consider it: Affordable health care and living expenses give retirees some leeway every month.

    Virginia – Lynchburg and Danville

    • Lynchburg: Monthly necessities cost ~$2,956; The highest liveness score in the study is 90. (Source: NASDAQ)
    • Danville: Even cheaper for essentials at ~$2,836; Liveliness Score: 75. (Source: NASDAQ)
    • Why these are special: Low cost of living with access to cultural and outdoor facilities.

    Retirement Options I Didn’t Expect

Here are some places ChatGPT surprised me.

    Hagerstown, Maryland

Impressed by ChatGPT’s top pick, I wanted more information. ChatGPT included a link to a Nasdaq republishing of a 2023 GOBankingRates article listing the top East Coast options for retirees.

two years ago? I probably wouldn’t believe those numbers today. So, I asked ChatGPT to give me more updated information on Hagerstown.

That sign yielded much more detail, including that the cost of living index in Hagerstown is about 5% lower than the U.S. average. ChatGPT also indicated that seniors enjoy a higher quality of life, especially when it comes to access to health care.

    Lynchburg, Virginia

The liveness score of 90 caught my attention. Since ChatGPT again linked to the 2023 GOBankingRates article, I wanted more current information about what makes Lynchburg such a great retirement location.

I received solid answers, including the fact that Virginia does not tax Social Security benefits (which I confirmed online). ChatGPT also cited the area’s natural beauty along with opportunities for a healthy life: “With 18+ miles of urban trails like the scenic Blackwater Creek Trail – with bay views, a waterfall and a historic train tunnel – Lynchburg supports an active, healthy lifestyle.”

I also learned about Lynchburg’s arts and culture scene as well as opportunities for seniors to get involved in the community.

    Guanajuato, Mexico

When I checked the sourcing for this city, I found that it came from vocal media Articles published this year. This led me to believe that ChatGPT’s summary was reasonably accurate: “Charming colonial town, monthly budget about $2,200-$2,700 (rent included). Affordable food, utilities, and healthcare. Walkable downtown, friendly expat scene.”

American retirees are often not encouraged to move abroad, which piqued my interest. But looking at the source, I can see why ChatGPT highlighted it: fresh produce is readily available, health care seems fairly affordable and the culture is thriving. sounds like fun.

    milwaukee

I was naturally curious about the cities listed under the “Other American Gems Identified in Recent Coverage” section. I don’t remember ever recommending Milwaukee as a retirement hotspot, but ChatGPT’s summary made it sound appealing: “Affordable housing, vibrant arts, excellent health care, strong transit, and low taxes on Social Security.”

Source Check – Recently Published Investopedia Article – confirms that information. As author Brittany Brown stated: “Milwaukee County offers remarkably affordable housing compared to the national average. The average monthly housing cost in Milwaukee is $1,156, compared to the national average of $2,120.”

Brown also emphasized the area’s accessible and low-cost transit, strong health care systems, and strong sense of community: “About 15% of Milwaukee’s residents are over the age of 65, with many adult and retirement communities throughout the metro area.”

    Sebring, Florida

No list of retirement destinations would be complete without Florida. Since the Sebring was new to me – and had appeared in that “US Gems” section – I decided to look into it.

Once again, ChatGPT recently withdrew it Investopedia The piece that boosted my confidence in its summary: “Quiet, lake-rich environment, moderate risk from natural disasters, no income/inheritance taxes, lower than average housing costs.”

In addition to a below average cost of living, Sebring also offers retirees a strong arts, culture, and history scene. And for those looking to go faster, there’s Sebring International Raceway.

    my takeaway

As you may have noticed, I used ChatGPT as a base for searching for beautiful and safe retirement destinations where I could live on $3,000 per month – mostly checking out the sources it offered and doing my own research.

This approach seems wise, as ChatGPT sometimes does not include the latest sourcing.

That said, it is a great tool for brainstorming and generating ideas for further investigation. Good luck in your research for retirement destinations!
