The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified the recall of Horizon Organic milk boxes as a Class II recall due to a packaging issue, affecting more than 63,000 cartons in four states.
Return of the 6-pack of 8 fl. oz Shelf Stable 1% Lowfat DHA Omega-3 Chocolate Milk Box was first announced on March 11. Horizon said in a news release at the time that the recall was triggered by a “packaging seal issue,” which could cause boxes to swell, leak, or spoil the milk.
“Corrective and preventive actions have been implemented to prevent recurrence,” Horizon said in the release.
The FDA describes a Class II recall as a situation in which “use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” or where “the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
According to the agency, Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC initiated the recall, affecting approximately 63,396 cartons.
