More than 10 million metal wire-bristle grill brushes sold at Home Depot are being voluntarily recalled after reports the loose bristles could get into food and cause injury, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

According to the CPSC, the recall involves six Nexgrill brush models sold nationwide between 2015 and 2026, ranging in price from $5 to $15. The agency said metal hairs can break off, stick to the grill mesh and be swallowed, potentially becoming lodged in the throat or digestive tract and causing internal injuries.

The CPSC said Nexgrill is aware of at least 68 reports of bristles becoming detached, including five cases that required medical treatment.

“Our company is committed to providing the highest quality and safety standards so our customers can confidently use our cleaning tools for the BBQ grills that serve as the cornerstone of family meals and gatherings,” Nexgrill said in a statement to USA TODAY.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled brushes and contact Nexgrill for a full refund issued in the form of a gift card, the agency said. NexGrill will also provide instructions on disposal of brushes.

Which Nexgrill brushes are being recalled?

The recall issued by the CPSC covers the following model numbers, except for the years they were sold:

    • 530-0024, 19-inch Grill Brush (sold 2015 – 2026)
    • 530-0024G, Grill Cleaning Brush with Scraper (sold in 2022 – 2026)
    • 530-0034, Long Handle Grill Brush (sold 2015-2026)
    • 530-0039, Grill Brush and Scraper (sold 2015 – 2026)
    • 530-0041, Grill Brush with Scrub Pad (sold in 2015 – 2026)
    • 530-0042, Wooden Handle Grill Brush (sold in 2015 – 2021)
